There are two main categories of visual design you should consider – web design and visual content.  Each of them is very important for the website to function properly.  Don’t think of them just as nifty addition, think of them as necessity!
Creating any part of visual design on your own can be pretty challenging.  Everything else you can find a way to do, and you can even master design tools but the truth is – some people just don’t have what it takes. And that’s perfectly fine.  Somebody is talented for running business, somebody is talented for singing, and somebody is talented for design.
So before you devote your time to learning the tools and realize few years later that you still haven’t created a website, hire a professional.  Honestly, if there is one advice regarding web design and visual content creation, it is to hire a professional and get it done fast.
That being said, there are still some things you can do on your own.  You can find free images (or buy some) to use as part of the website visual content.  You can make sure images send the message you want them to send.  They should be in tone with the rest of your website, so you need to figure out if you need complete professionalism or is a healthy dose of humor allowed.  You can make sure images are quality.  Also, don’t put too much of them – you don’t want clutter on the website, and it’s easy to get carried away.  If the image doesn’t bring additional value to the content, don’t include it.  Ok, maybe include it if it has a value on its own.  But don’t overdo It.
