Google Search is moving from a ranking problem to a citation problem.

At Google I/O 2026, Google’s VP of Search Elizabeth Reid said AI Mode has “surpassed one billion monthly users,” with “queries more than doubling every quarter since launch.” That single metric matters to every CEO because it signals a durable shift in how demand is discovered: more customers will consume a synthesized answer first, and only a subset will click.

Meanwhile, third-party data suggests the click curve is being reshaped rather than simply “lost.” Search Engine Land, citing Seer Interactive’s analysis of 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion impressions, found that searches with AI Overviews showed materially lower organic CTR than searches without them, but pages cited inside AI Overviews outperform non-cited pages on the same SERP.

1) The headline: AI Mode is already massive (and growing fast)

Two lines from Google’s I/O update should reframe your 2026 search strategy:

  • AI Mode has “surpassed one billion monthly users.”
  • Queries are “more than doubling every quarter since launch.”

Why this matters: when a new interface crosses a billion monthly users, it stops being an “experiment” and becomes the default mental model for searching. For marketers, that means the competitive set expands beyond the ten blue links to include: the AI answer itself, the cited sources within it, and the follow-up conversational flow that keeps context.

2) CTR reality: AI answers redistribute clicks toward cited sources

Seer’s dataset (reported by Search Engine Land) illustrates the new hierarchy:

  • Queries without an AI Overview averaged about 3.3% CTR.
  • When an AI Overview appears, cited pages averaged about 2.1% CTR.
  • Non-cited pages on those SERPs fell to about 0.9% CTR.

That’s the new rule: if you’re not being cited, your “rank” can become a vanity metric. This also reframes reporting. You should track two separate funnels:

  • Citation funnel: How often your brand/page is referenced in AI Overviews/AI Mode answers.
  • Click funnel: The subset of queries where users still need depth, comparison, proof, pricing, or a next step.

3) What to do now: a practical GEO plan for the next 30 days

Business owners don’t need theory — they need an execution checklist. Here’s a plan you can run this month:

  • Pick 10 “money queries.” Choose the searches that influence pipeline (category + location, competitor comparisons, pricing, integrations, best-in-class lists).
  • Build “citation-ready” pages. Add clear definitions, short answer blocks near the top, and supporting evidence (stats, references, methodology). Use semantic HTML (real headings, lists, tables) so answer engines can extract reliably.
  • Create a proof layer. Add case studies, original data, customer quotes, and screenshots. AI summaries tend to cite sources that look definitive.
  • Reduce ambiguity. Tighten entity signals: consistent brand name, product names, and author/company information across the site and key listings.
  • Measure “share of citations.” Manually check AI Overviews/AI Mode for your money queries weekly and log whether you’re cited and which pages are used.

4) The strategic shift: optimize for being the reference, not the result

Classic SEO asked: “How do we rank #1?” AI-first search asks: “How do we become the reference the model pulls from?”

In practice, that means prioritizing:

  • Clarity over cleverness: straightforward claims, definitions, and structured sections.
  • Depth where it counts: comparison pages, pricing explainers, “how it works,” and decision support content.
  • Authority signals: real-world examples, sourced stats, and transparent authorship.

If you’re still reporting only rankings and sessions, you’re measuring the wrong battlefield. The winning KPI is increasingly: Are we the source the AI trusts enough to cite?
