Amazon just opened a new buying path into conversational search. On September 10, Amazon Ads announced a partnership with OpenAI that lets selected U.S. advertisers extend existing Amazon campaigns into ChatGPT through Amazon DSP. Delta Vacations is among the first brands testing the pilot, which puts sponsored text and image units beneath ChatGPT responses.
This is more than another ChatGPT ads headline. It connects retail media’s purchase-intent data and established campaign infrastructure to an AI interface where people research, compare and make decisions in one continuous conversation. For marketers, the strategic question is shifting from “Should we test AI search?” to “How do we buy and measure influence inside it?”
Amazon is turning AI search into a media-buying layer
The pilot makes ChatGPT inventory available as a managed service through Amazon DSP. Advertisers can use cost-per-click or cost-per-thousand-impressions buying, while Amazon helps set up and optimize campaigns. Amazon also says product-feed ads can automatically generate creative from product catalogs.
The division of control matters: Amazon manages the campaign, but OpenAI’s ad system decides when and where an ad is delivered. The placements appear below organic ChatGPT answers with sponsored labels, according to Marketing Dive’s report. This is not a conventional keyword auction. Relevance depends on a user’s conversational context, the answer being generated and the commercial moment inside the dialogue.
Retail media data is the competitive advantage
Amazon is bringing a powerful asset to an AI environment: signals from browsing, shopping and streaming behavior. Amazon Ads says its systems use “trillions of proprietary browsing, shopping, and streaming signals,” while Marketing Dive reports that Amazon’s advertising business neared $70 billion in revenue last year. That scale gives the partnership a credible route from broad conversational intent to performance media.
The opportunity extends beyond products sold on Amazon. Travel, financial services, software and other nonendemic brands can benefit from an audience that is actively planning or comparing options. Delta Vacations President Katrin Koenig said the company will use consumer insights to inform “how and when” its offers appear as travelers discover vacation possibilities, according to Amazon Ads’ announcement.
For agencies, this changes the value of a media plan. First-party and retail-intent data may become the bridge between an open-ended AI conversation and a measurable business outcome.
The measurement problem is still unresolved
Early access does not equal mature attribution. Pilot advertisers will receive aggregated metrics such as impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC. But there is no public standard yet for conversational impressions, answer-level exposure, incrementality or overlap with an existing Amazon DSP buy.
That gap is strategically important. A click beneath an answer is not necessarily equivalent to a search click. A user may ask several follow-up questions, change direction, or act later through a different device. If marketers judge the channel only by last-click performance, they may undervalue influence. If they accept platform-reported results without a holdout, they may overstate it.
The sensible starting point is a controlled test: define a business outcome before launch, establish a comparable audience or geography, separate brand and direct-response objectives, and require a post-campaign readout that includes assisted conversions and frequency. Treat the first 30 days as measurement design, not just media buying.
What businesses should do next
- Audit conversational intent. List the questions customers ask before they buy, then map which answers, comparisons and objections your brand should own.
- Prepare structured product and service data. Clean catalogs, pricing, availability, policies and proof points give both ad systems and AI answers better inputs.
- Start with one decision-heavy use case. Travel planning, home improvement, software comparison and financial research are better pilots than broad awareness campaigns.
- Protect the brand context. Set exclusions, approve creative variants and review where your offers appear. Conversational relevance should not become adjacency to an unsuitable answer.
- Build an incrementality plan. Use holdouts or matched markets, and compare assisted actions with ordinary Amazon DSP performance before scaling.
Amazon’s move signals that AI search is becoming an addressable media environment, not merely an organic visibility challenge. Other buying platforms are already following: Adform was selected as a technology partner for the European rollout of ChatGPT Ads, giving agencies another managed route into conversational placements.
The brands that win will not be the ones that simply add an AI channel to a media spreadsheet. They will be the ones that connect useful information, credible offers and disciplined measurement to the moments when customers are making decisions.
